5 Signs of Burnout in Expats Living in Dubai (And What Actually Helps)

Dubai has a way of making "I'm just tired" feel like a permanent state rather than a passing phase. Between the pace of life, the distance from home, and the pressure to make the most of the opportunity that brought you here, it is easy to mistake burnout for simply how things are in this city.

If you have moved here for work, for a partner's job, or for a fresh start, you are not imagining it, burnout hits expats differently. You are often doing it without the support network you would have back home, no parents nearby for a weekend reset, no old friends who already know your whole story, no familiar routines to fall back on when things get hard.

Here's what burnout can actually look like when you're living it, plus what tends to help.

1. You're tired in a way sleep doesn't fix

This is usually the first sign, and the easiest to dismiss. You get eight hours and still wake up depleted. It's not laziness it's your nervous system staying switched on even when your body is technically resting.

2. Small decisions feel enormous

What to cook for dinner. Which WhatsApp message to reply to first. These shouldn't be hard, but when you're burnt out, even minor choices feel like they take more energy than you have. This is a classic sign your system is overloaded, not that you're failing at adulting.

3. You've stopped doing the things that used to recharge you

The gym, the beach, catching up with a friend the things that used to feel good now feel like one more thing on the list. When rest itself starts to feel like effort, that's usually burnout talking, not you.

4. You feel disconnected from who you were before you moved here

This one is especially common in expats. You built a whole life and identity somewhere else, and Dubai for all its opportunity, can sometimes feel like it's asking you to leave that person behind. Feeling like a slightly blurred version of yourself is one of the clearest, quietest signs of burnout.

5. Everything feels urgent, even when it isn't

Burnout often shows up as a low hum of anxiety underneath everyday tasks, like you are constantly bracing for the next thing, even when nothing is actually wrong right now.

What actually helps

Burnout doesn't usually resolve with a weekend off relaxing, if it did, you would have fixed it yourself already. It tends to need a bit of space to actually be heard and understood, without having to explain or justify why you are struggling in a city that looks, from the outside, like it has everything going for it.

That's the space I hold for clients. Sessions combine coaching, emotional support, and energy work to help your nervous system finally feel safe enough to settle, so you're not just coping, you're actually recovering.

If any of this sounds familiar, you don't have to figure it out alone.
